My Announcement

I’m running for Congress because Washington has lost sight of what is really happening to the hard-working middle class in the cities and towns in America. There’s a dangerous disconnect between what Washington thinks will help the American people out of this miserable economic decline and what will really make a difference in their lives right now. I see the cost and the reality of that disconnect every single day.

Rhode Island has been hit as hard as any place in America by this recession. Unemployment here is nearly the worst in the country. And no matter what the hopeful stirrings and positive signs they’re seeing in the rest of America, the fact is that Rhode Island is still in the thick of the worst of it. Somehow Washington hasn’t figured out that our Number One priority has to be creating, retaining, and training for jobs of the future.

Rhode Islanders don’t want to hear about billions of federal dollars in bank bailouts. They don’t even want to hear about billions of dollars of stimulus funds tagged for Rhode Island if that money isn’t helping them find jobs and pay for groceries today.

I’m running for Congress to take to Washington what I know about getting hard things done. That’s what mayors do every day—solve difficult problems. We cut costs, resolve complex problems, and look an impossible challenge in the eye and just figure it out. We know how to work across party lines and build coalitions to get things done. I intend to bring these critical skills and perspectives to Washington and represent this state’s urgent need to move beyond our current stagnancy and toward the economic vitality that I am so confident is within our reach.

I look forward to presenting my vision for the future of this great country to the citizens of Rhode Island’s First District in the coming months.

David N. Cicilline

Statement regarding Arizona immigration law

As the Mayor of Providence and candidate for U.S. Congress, I strongly denounce the "Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act" recently passed by the Republican-dominated Arizona State Legislature.

East Side State and Local Elected Officials Endorse David Cicilline for Congress

Four East Side elected officials announced their support of Mayor David Cicilline’s campaign for Congress citing his proven ability to get things done for Rhode Island, and with full confidence that he is the person who will best deliver for Rhode Island in the Congress of the United States.  Representing a vast majority of the First-Congressional-District-part of Providence, Councilman Clifford Wood, Councilman Kevin Jackson, Representative Edith Ajello, and Senator Rhoda Perry joined together to enthusiastically endorse Cicilline’s candidacy.

An Open Letter to Commissioner Koller

April 23, 2010

Statement from Eric Hyers, Cicilline campaign manager

It’s unfortunate that Mr. Lynch has attempted to use the hardships of flood victims for his own political  advantage.  The dedicated men and women of the Providence Police Department, Providence Fire Department, and Providence Emergency Management Agency have been working around the clock to ensure the safety of the residents who have been devastated by flood damage. To use this crisis to take pot shots at our public safety officials based on a radio report is reckless and irresponsible.

Great News

In the six short weeks since I announced my candidacy for Congress, our campaign has raised over $725,000.  We exceeded all of our expectations, and the energy behind this campaign is incredible.  You have sent a message that you want a representative with a proven record of delivering results for hard-working Rhode Island families.

Projo Editorial: Municipal politics and finance

Obviously, in these difficult times, the public must watch municipal budgets carefully. But in an election year, sometimes politicians make wild accusations. For instance, Providence City Councilor John Lombardi, who may run for mayor against the incumbent, David Cicilline, has charged that there have been inappropriate or unauthorized transfers of money between municipal accounts.
